I'd guess that the problem is with python3. python2.4 and 2.5 are preferred.

There is no single tarball available of the entire system, though you
can download tarballs of the individual projects.

(Actually, the download is less than 2GB, the 2GB number includes both
the git clones and the git checkouts).
