in that case i am in exactly the correct place, i would prefer working on the kernel, that is something of great interest to me. i wouldn't mind cerating a utorrent like cilent, though i am not sure it will be approved by my school as project since it's not innovative at all, only creating exiting thing for different platform (important but aint good enough for school project), and it's not related at all to kernel devel so it's less interesting for me. would like to get my hands dirty inside the kernel, if it means implementing protocols that are missing interesting driver modules .etc. i would have a look in the other lists you suggested though. thanks.
