Hello,

Using an ADP2, I followed the instructions at the "Building for an
Android Dev Phone"
link at source.android.com/source, using "sapphire" instead of "dream"
and found
step (4) run "adb root" fails with error "adbd cannot run as root in
production builds".

I came across entries in the "Android-DevPhone-Updating" group which
say that the
ADP2 is not built with a userdebug build, but with a user build, and
has no root access.

I assume the next step (5) in the above page needs root access on the
device to run
vendor/htc/sapphire-open/extract-files.sh in order to extract the
proprietary binaries from
the device.

My questions are:
1) Are those proprietary binaries available elsewhere for the ADP2?
2) Do the rest of the instructions in the above page do anything
without doing (4)?
3) Is there a reliable work-around for the adb root access issue?
4) Does this rule out the adb (recovery image) method of flashing the
device?
5) What is the method to install a custom build of the OS on the ADP2
phone?

thanks
