I filed a Jira report as suggested by Martin. I've used Maven to build the samples and I'm considering it for another project, so I'm not anti-Maven, but the point of this exercise was to migrate an AndroMDA 2.1.2 project to 3.0 with minimum changes, so that meant using the same build tool.
I know it's a pain to continue to support old items, but introducing new dependencies like Maven, MagicDraw, etc makes AndroMDA less accessible to potential users.
