Of course, I agree: but the discriminator used with Hibernate is just used when 
using the "class" inheritance strategy with Hibernate 
(http://team.andromda.org/docs/andromda-hibernate-cartridge/namespace.html#hibernateInheritanceStrategy).
  I think the best way to deal with what you want to do is by defining the 
PublicationType enumeration and then setting this for each subclass of 
publication.
