that trailing </a> element was a bug in one of the recent versions, you can fix 
it manually (like you did) or use the latest 3.1-RC1-SNAPSHOT version, it has 
been fixed in that one



about the problem related to the compilation errors I can't really say what's 
going wrong, the samples all build fine from CVS (they always did or the build 
would fail and people would not be able to use it)



I'm not sure what it is you did, can you try building the sample on your own ? 
(without copying stuff, just building the animal quiz as found in the 
distribution)



if you try it and it works you will be ableto compare both versions of the same 
file and see what is going wrong
