Finally it worked.  I did not have the garmin kernel module installed. 
Now it seems to be all better.  I had to insmod the module directly, 
giving the full path, but maybe that was due to the fact that I had just 
installed the module and the kernel didn't know where to look.

But, this is a big deal success story, since that makes this combination 
usable on my trip.  Thanks a bunch.
