Yes, I tried this because I have a vague desire to get Debian booting from my SD card, and it is in that context that I have had to look at these files. However the volume applet wouldn't load and I think the sound was broken. I didn't follow it up because I was trying to get Debian to work. That was in turn frustrated by other things.
