To make this backup, he could for example use a liveram disk or something
alike, couldn't he? That seems pretty straightforward with a little of UNIX
knowledge.

That's not a stupid idea at all.

Provided Chad doesn't have the system he wants to backup running, he can
just create a tarball (or zip file if that's your thing) of the entire
filesystem from whatever media it's stored on.
