Yeah it's not the obvious thing to do, which is funny and it's not widely
used because *inx systems tend to be servers (or mainframes) and downtime
isn't typically an option for doing backups.

RE: Merciadri's comment about the ramdisk
That seems a bit excessive, you yeah you could create one and then copy
stuff to it, but then you'd still need to save the information somewhere.
It's far easier to just take the media the filesystem is already on and make
an archive of it from your computer using whatever archive tool you're
comfortable with.  I like tar, some people prefer zip files.  Not that you
even have to use an archive tool, a straight copy should work just as well,
but if you're host OS is Windows, then I'd say stick to an archive system
like zip or something for fear of Windows deciding that all those yummy
Linux text files need carriage return characters at the ends of every line.
Which doesn't tend to go over well when you try to run Linux later.
