If udev is giving you trouble and you have access to a recent (2.6.32 or newer) kernel built with OE, you can try generating a rootfs with narcissus[1] using the following options: complexity: advanced dev manager: kernel That will use the new in-kernel devmanager and leave out udev in the filesystem.
