I figured out what the problem was. I was doing a transformRequest on the data, but forgetting to "return" the transformed data. Duh.
Thank you for your wisdom Sander. I prefer $http for the same reason: more explicit control. I'm happy that $resource works, but I think I will proceed to use my own $http wrapper.
