Hi Stacey,

This is a situation where you need $parse
<https://docs.angularjs.org/api/ng/service/$parse>,

you can try something like this:

    .directive("kDataItem", ['$parse', function($parse) {
        return {
            restrict: "A",
            link: function(scope, element, attributes) {
                var assign = $parse(attributes.ksDataItem).assign
                scope.$on('kendoWidgetCreated', function(event, widget) {
                    if ($.compare(widget.element, element)) {
                        widget.bind('change', function(e) {
                            scope.$apply(function() {
                                asign(scope, e.sender.dataItem().toJSON());
                            });
                        });
                    }
                })
            }
        }
    }]);

Does this help?

Regards
Sander
