Actually, ignore that previous comment, I think I figured it out.

In my route I used *reloadOnSearch: false*, then in my controller, I'm 
listening to the $routeUpdate event

$scope.$on('$routeUpdate',function(){
console.log($routeParams);
})

This seems to work just fine, however I'm not sure if it's the best solution
