You can use  use ExpectedConditions: 
http://www.protractortest.org/#/api?view=ProtractorExpectedConditions
in combination with browser.wait().  That is very useful when the UI is 
very dynamic and changing a lot.

With ExpectedConditions, you can wait until an item is clickable, wait 
until it is visible, etc.
