U.S., Georgian Ships Hold Exercise
The Associated Press
Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001; 11:37 a.m. EDT

TBILISI, Georgia An American naval ship and six
Georgian ships practiced troop landings and other
maneuvers during one-day military exercises in the
Black Sea on Wednesday.

The operation outside this former Soviet republic's
port of Poti was overseen by Georgian Defense Minister
David Tevzadze and led by U.S. Navy SEAL instructors,
said Defense Ministry spokesman Zurab Andzhaparidze.

Poti last year played host to 11-nation military
exercises under NATO's Partnership for Peace program.

Georgia, frustrated by its difficult relationship with
neighboring Russia, has looked to NATO and the West in
recent years for support.
