Danube Bombing Debris to Be Cleared
The Associated Press

BUDAPEST, Hungary Debris from NATO bombing that is
blocking navigation on the Danube River in Yugoslavia
will not be cleared before next spring, an official
said Wednesday.

During its war against Yugoslavia over Kosovo, NATO
bombed three bridges spanning the Danube at the
northern Serbian city of Novi Sad in April 1999. Since
then, crews using sonar have located unexploded bombs
on the river bed, but have not removed them. The
twisted steel of the bridges blocking boat traffic
must also be lifted.

"All the debris will be removed by spring next year,"
said Hellmuth Strasser, president of the Danube
Commission, which is made up of countries through
which the Danube flows. Initially, the commission had
said the debris would be cleared this year.

The cost of the cleanup is $22.8 million, and the
European Union has provided $19 million. The remainder
is being raised from other sources.
