Baghdad Says One Wounded in U.S., British Attack
August 25, 2001 1:37 pm EST

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq said on Saturday one person was injured during an
attack on civilian targets in the south by American and British planes.

"At 11:45 a.m. (3:45 a.m. EDT) this day, U.S. and British warplanes violated
our air space, carrying out two sorties from Saudi Arabia and 16 sorties
from Kuwait," an Iraqi military spokesman said in a statement carried by the
Iraqi News Agency (INA).

"The planes flew over the provinces of Basra, Dhiqar, Meisan, Qadissiya and
Wassit, attacking service and civil installations in Wassit province and
injuring one citizen," the spokesman said.

He said anti-aircraft defenses fired at the planes and forced them to leave.

In London, the Defense Ministry confirmed U.S. and British planes had
carried out operations over Iraq, but could give no details.

U.S. and British jets patrol the skies over the north and south of Iraq.

Washington says the sorties are necessary to protect Kurdish and Shi'ite
populations from possible attack by Iraqi troops.

Iraq does not recognize the no-fly zones and vowed in 1998 to challenge the
patrols with anti-aircraft installations.
