Visit our website: HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --------------------------------------------- [Approximately three months ago a NATO official - from the Alliance's 'electoral commission'? - announced that Slovakia's accession to NATO would be seriously jeopardized, if not killed, should the party of Vladimir Meciar, the "most popular politician in the country," enter the federal government, even as a junior coalition partner. But only "democratic free market countries" need apply, as has been noted; if so, NATO has its own definition of democracy, one not presented in civics course textbooks.] European Parliament Official Worried About 2002 General Election in Slovakia Sep 5, 2001 -- (BBC Monitoring) Text of report in English by Slovak news agency TASR web site. Strasbourg, 5 September: The chairman of the Foreign Committee of European Parliament (EP), Elmar Brok, is worried about the result of the 2002 general election in Slovakia. He warned at a press conference in Strasbourg that if democratic principles and the rule of law are not adhered to in any candidate country, he will challenge the EP to stop accession negotiations with such a country. "The current government (in Slovakia) carried out good work in the development of democracy, rule of law and economics. When I now see public opinion research indicating that the government will lose the majority in parliament, I am afraid that the pre-1998 situation could repeat," Brok said. "That situation under the previous government (led by current opposition leader and most popular politician in the country, Vladimir Meciar, editorial note) was the reason why we did not start negotiations with Slovakia at that time," said Brok. However, he hopes that these apprehensions will not materialize and that the public opinion polls will serve as a warning. The chairman of the EP Foreign Committee did not say exactly what the consequences the return of the former government could have for Slovakia. "If the nominated country changes its internal policy in a way that democracy and legal statehood stops working, I think that EP's responsibility is to stop the entry negotiations," said Brok.
