(Charter-97, January 27, 2000)
Commenting the decision by PA ("parliamentary assembly") [of] CoE ("Council
of Europe") , which ruled January 26 to cancel the status of Belarus with
CoE, Alexander Lukashenko called it "foolishness". His rude nature once again
prevailed over common sense. "I'm not going to comment this foolishness, - he
said January 27 upon visiting Minsk central hospital: It is political
boorishness. I'll tell you one thing - the West will never outplay me and
create opposition out of my own men. There'll be no double standards here. As
for the human rights, we respect them just inasmuch as they do it in the
member-states of CoE. Do they think we are waging wars here, or what? Do we
have national hatred and religious intolerance? No!" Lukashenko claims
Belarus enjoys the lowest level of unemployment, guaranteed rights to live,
receive free medical care, get educated and employed. "What other human
rights are they talking about? It's a mere political populism. They wish
there were another president here. But Belarusians don't think so. They wish
there were another Parliament here… Let me tell you, guys, we will live the
way we want to live and according to our own laws. And I don't care what they
have passed there… Yes, it is not nice for us. But, I believe they will soon
feel ashamed for their behavior, as they stick to the policies of double
standards.
