Subject: [CubaNews] US Asks Cuba for Any Info on Terrorists

[Only one obvious comment: We hope the US Government is also asking
the Miami Mafia for "any information on terrorists," especially those
fun-loving fly-boys in Basulto's Brothers to the Rescue and the rest
of the gusanos who have pals at the various CIA proprietaries in the
Florida aviation industry. CUBA has been sending to US law
enforcement "any information on terrorists" that they pick up right
along -- as they have often explained. ]

U.S. Asks Cuba for Any Information on Terrorists

By Rafael Lorente
Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- The State Department asked Cuban officials last week
what, if anything, they knew about the deadly terrorist attacks at
the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Having been asked the question puts the island in the company of
Iran, Sudan and Syria, three other countries the United States
normally considers pariahs, but now is hoping will help in its
investigation of the attacks.

The four nations are on the State Department's list of countries that
sponsor terrorism. All but Iran have been asked for information or
other assistance.

The other three countries on the terrorism list are Libya, Iraq and
North Korea.

A State Department official downplayed the contact with Cuba saying
it was a question asked during regular meetings between the two
countries. He could not say if the Cubans had offered any
information.

"We do maintain contacts with the Interests Section here and this is
the question of the day,'' said the official, who wished to remain
anonymous.

The State Department's 2000 Overview of State-Sponsored Terrorism
accuses Cuba of harboring terrorists and American fugitives, and
having ties to insurgents in Latin America.

"Colombia's two largest terrorist organizations, the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia and the National Liberation Army, both
maintained a permanent presence on the island," the report said.

Cuba has expressed condolences about last week's attack and an
official with Cuba's Foreign Ministry in Havana said his country
would welcome cooperation.

"The United States cannot abstain from asking any country for
information, even a fragment of information could be useful at this
moment," said a Cuban Foreign Ministry official, who did not want his
name used. "I would be very pleased if this cooperation took place.
It would prove common sense prevails.''

But an anti-Fidel Castro group in the United States said Tuesday that
cooperating with Cuba would be tantamount to cooperating with
criminals and worried that some sort of deal might be cut between the
two countries.

"I'm sure there's some misguided people who believe in fact that we
should be dealing with criminals like this," said Dennis Hays, who
runs the Cuban American National Foundation's Washington office.

Like the United States and Cuba, the United States and Iran have been
bitter enemies for decades. Americans still have vivid memories of
the 52 hostages held for 444 days at the U.S. Embassy there in 1979.

But relations have warmed since Mohammad Khatami was elected
Iran'spresident in 1996.

Also, Iran is no friend of the Taliban and could benefit from
American pressure to prevent Iraq, its neighbor and foe, from
rearming.

Like other countries, Iran has expressed condolences.
