Ananova. 27 December 2001. Businessman says factory workers have held him hostage for 20 days. Workers at a bankrupt Chinese factory have reportedly held a toy importer for 20 days because of a dispute over money. The American-Chinese businessman and his wife say they were seized on by around 500 workers from the factory in Sheyang city, Jiangsu province. The laid off workers are believed to have been upset that they had not been paid for toys that had been exported to New York. Zhu Haiou, who's based in New Jersey, is being guarded round the clock at Sheda Toy Factory after his capture on December 7. The South China Morning Post says the dispute was over the payment of a bill of around US$55,00 (about 38,000) [sic]. His wife, Hu Lingling, was freed earlier this month and is now back in New Jersey trying to raise money to save her husband. They are close to an agreement after offering to pay the workers about US$7,000 and the balance on his return to New Jersey. The deal is being studied by the factory's bankruptcy committee. The police are not thought to have intervened out of fear of provoking the workers. Sheyang trade official Cai Hongshi said: "The workers are still unemployed and the bankruptcy procedures are taking place." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
