Ananova : Pentagon may use drug to subdue al-Qaida prisoners ==================================== The Pentagon is considering using Valium to subdue al-Qaida prisoners when it transfers them from Afghanistan to a naval base on Cuba. The first detainees may be moved from detention centres in Afghanistan to the Guantanamo Bay naval base within the next 36 hours. But military police responsible for the transfers face both logistical and security problems as they move the first handful of men to the facility. A total of 364 prisoners are being held by American forces, with most at Kandahar Airport and others in smaller groups around the country. The base at Guantanamo may also be the venue for the military tribunals President George W Bush announced would be used to try suspected foreign terrorists. Because it is not on US territory, prisoners would not be allowed to challenge their detention in American courts. Flights with the prisoners on board will take off from Kandahar airport, using C-17 cargo planes to an undisclosed third country. There the men will be transferred to C-141 transport planes, which can fly direct to Cuba without refuelling. CNN has reported the Pentagon is considering administering Valium to the prisoners to keep them docile on the long flight from Asia to the naval base. Officials told the network it would be an added security measure to prevent any trouble on board the planes taking the men to the prison. The Pentagon expects to release many of the men currently being held in Afghanistan into the custody of their native country but also wants to move as many as possible out of the country while conflict continues.
