Somali, Djibouti Presidents Meet on Possibility of U.S. Attack

Xinhuanet 2002-01-10 01:09:02

NAIROBI, January 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Djibouti President Ismail Omar
Guelleh met his Somali counterpart Abdulkassim Salat Hassan in
Djibouti on Wednesday to discuss terrorism issue and the
possibility of Osama bin Laden seeking refuge in Somalia,
according to reports reaching here from Djibouti.
The reports quoted Radio Djibouti as saying that the two heads
of state discussed issues of "common interest",  particularly the
pressure exerted on Somalia in the U.S.-led war against terrorism.

Somalia, named as one of the states the U. S. could target in a
widening war on terror, is seen by many analysts as an attractive
base for terrorists seeking secrecy because it is a lawless
patchwork of fiefdoms ruled by rival militias.
Western warships are patrolling the seas off Somalia as part of
efforts to prevent al Qaeda fighters escaping there following
their defeat in Afghanistan.
But Salat Hassan ruled out any U.S. strike on his country,
which he said no longer harbors terrorist organizations.
Somalia has been in the grip of rival warlords since it
descended into chaos after the ousting of former dictator Mohammed
Siad Barre in 1991. A transitional government was set up in
October 2000, but has yet to extend its control beyond the capital.
