Barry - not disputing what you say - since it is all true - nevertheless the world is not black and white - and all was not peaches and cream in the USSR. In the period Stalin - Brezhnev - of which I have some first hand knowledge - people were executed for no reason, my wifes grandfather for example - a Chekka General sent to Siberia in Stalins purges [which purges were merely the expression of Stalin's paranoia]. In my opinion, Stalin was not like Fidel, merely using force to establish the new order. I see Stalin as a megalomaniac mad man - impervious to world opinion, and hence my comparisopn with little Bush. Why do you think they executed Berea the day after Stalin died? How about Trotsky - did he deserve what he got? He played a bigger role in the revolution and was doing no harm when Stalin hunted him down. It seems to me that you are over simplifying. Just because someone works for something good - socialism for example - does not mean that that person was not evil. Many Russian hate Stalin - as you know he was not a Russian - and many Russians feel that was why he could so easily kill them. My view - socialism can be evil and/or good - at the same time. The Soviet Union was both. The US is both. You talk a bit like little Bush when he says "either you are with us or against us". In fact most situations permit a third position. Richard Knox: I think Stalin might have exceeded little Bush. I find the above quite offensive, I'm surprised to see it in my mailbox. Force has been required to establish ALL socio-economic systems, especially in the first generation or two. There is a big difference between (actually existing) socialism and capitalism, however. With the former, tanks and troops bring with them infrastructure, industry, medical care, pensions, education, a dominant place in the world. With the latter, tanks and troops bring with them only enough development to ship out all raw materials, poverty and the position of being a labor and resource brothel for the 1st World. We could only WANT Stalin (and subsequent Soviet administrators) to 'exceed little Bush' in the endeavors of building (actually existing) socialism. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
