Louis R Godena: Great. So this non-entity will continue to hang over
the CP like a low-grade virus as it slides inexorably further and
further to the right. Sometimes I wonder if he and Gus Hall were
separated at birth:-)

As much as I appreciate your frustration in general, an examination of
the report demonstrates that, like it or not, Zyuganov is fighting to
keep the CP from going FURTHER to the right, as evinced by the comments,
reproduced below, of other sections of the party.

'Mikhail Mashkovtsev, governor of the Far Eastern region of Kamchatka,
said Communists should consider cooperating with Putin on "key issues"
as he was sure to be re-elected in 2004.'

'"Large sections of the population denounce the ills of capitalism but
have no intention of going back to socialism for the moment," he said in
televised remarks. "Our task, a long and difficult one, is to work on
society's views for a return to a socialist form of development. You
cannot achieve that merely by criticizing everything."'

So, as much as you might dislike Zyuganov, an embattled Brezhnev, the
guy above is an embattled Gorbachev -- even worse news.

History produces the men (and women) of the age. They don't change the
age, at best they move along what is (already) within the history of the
age.

These aren't heroic times, Zyuganov is simply the personification of the
CP's options as they stand right now.
