AFP. 22 January 2002. Saddam slams US over treatment of Guantanamo captives. BAGHDAD -- Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has denounced the treatment of al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners held by the US military at a naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a violation of their rights, newspapers reported Tuesday. "They (Americans) are violating the laws that they themselves enacted," Saddam was quoted as saying during a meeting with Iraqi health officials on Monday. "They used human rights and the rights of prisoners for propaganda purposes against other countries. But when their turn came to uphold those rights, they openly violated them," he said. Turning to the situation in Iraq, Saddam urged his people to remain steadfast, saying they would ultimately "overcome the unparalleled difficulties" they have been going through for more than 11 years. "We have no choice but to remain steadfast in order to thwart our enemies' malicious intentions," he said. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
