AFP. 13 March 2002. Milosevic accuses Albanian witness of giving "false
testimony."

THE HAGUE -- Slobodan Milosevic accused an ethnic Albanian railwayman of
giving false testimony Wednesday at his war crimes trial here, before
the presiding judge admonished the former Yugoslav leader.

"This is false testimony," Milosevic exclaimed, charging that the
witness had contradicted himself during cross-examination. The former
president then tried to discredit the man and his relatives before the
judge stopped him.

"When we are not telling the truth, we have to remember exactly what we
said before. Do you know this proverb?" Milosevic asked Bajram Bucaliu,
a 44-year-old from the southern Serbian province of Kosovo.

The contested point concerned the extent of sanctions imposed on ethnic
Albanian railwaymen who continued speaking their language after Belgrade
banned it from use at the railways in 1990.

The ban was part of Belgrade's bid to rein in what it saw as separatism
in Kosovo, the population of which is mainly ethnic Albanian.

"We were deprived of 15 percent of our salaries, sometimes for up to six
months," said Bucaliu.

Milosevic countered by recalling a 1987 train accident blamed on
Bucaliu.

The witness however calmly acknowledged the incident and said it was of
a sort that "happens frequently."

Milosevic then blasted the man's family, saying his father served a
prison sentence and his nephew allegedly trafficked in illegal tobacco.

Presiding Judge Richard May interrupted Milosevic, saying his attempts
to sully the witness served no purpose, and advised him to move on.

On Tuesday, Milosevic was cut off by May when he charged that the
prosecution was manipulating witnesses. Milosevic was told to avoid
comments and argue his point by questioning the witness.
