Reuters (with additional material by BBC). 16 March 2002. EU Hails Free
- Market Deal, Thousands Protest.

BARCELONA -- EU leaders clinched a deal on Saturday to break France's
state monopoly on electricity and said it showed they were serious about
free-market reforms that will help Europe match America's economic
dynamism.

A quarter of a million anti-capitalist protesters took to the streets of
Barcelona after the European Union summit to denounce them for selling
out to global capitalism.

Thousands of Spanish police massed to prevent a repeat in Barcelona of
violence at a summit at Genoa last July where a young militant was
killed.

Some witnesses said they saw isolated acts of vandalism and scuffles
with police but the first couple of hours of the march appeared to pass
off largely peacefully.

Although the march was for the most part noisy but peaceful, a BBC
correspondent reports that towards the end of the demonstration riot
police fired tear gas amid running skirmishes with the protesters in the
southern part of the city.

"We're here to say 'no' to the European Union, which with each passing
day is becoming a model for globalization and is more and more and more
like the U.S. in favor of arms and war," Ada Colau, a spokeswoman for
the organizers, told Reuters.
