[Filipino security forces leave for Kosovo and East
Timor, where they'll be joined by the first Japanese
troops deployed abroad since World War II: at the same
time U.S. special forces and assault troops are
fighting in the Phlippines; NATO-UNMIK armed and
trained former KLA terrorists cum Kosovo Protection
Corps personnel leave en masse to invade Macedonia,
creating the pretext for a German-led military
occupation of the nation; German troops are partially
redeployed to Afghanistan, the first time since World
War II that German soldiers are stationed outside of
Europe; Bulgarian troops are sent to Afghanistan as
U.S. air force personnel set up base in Bulgaria; the
Czech military is deployed to Kuwait, the Romanian to
Central Asia, the British SAS to Colombia and the
world soon bristles with bayonets and armor.
But it's always for a good reason: Supporting
terrorism or opposing it. Defending a country's
national sovereignty or overrriding it. Intervening on
behalf of the alleged rights of a linguistic or
cultural community (Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia) or
contributing to its extermination (Turkey, Sri Lanka,
Western Sahara).
Always an excuse for war. Never an excuse for war.]
