First unexploded NATO bomb lifted from Danube Saturday, 16-Mar-2002 11:00AMStory from AFP Copyright 2002 by Agence France-Presse (via ClariNet) NOVI SAD, Yugoslavia, March 16 (AFP) - Serbian explosives experts lifted an unexploded NATO bomb from the Danube Saturday, dropped by NATO warplanes during their 1999 bombing campaign against Yugoslavia. The bomb, containing 200 kilograms of explosives (440 pounds), was pulled from the Danube near the partially destroyed Sloboda (Freedom) bridge in Novi Sad, in the north of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). The bomb was taken to a Yugoslav military base, where it was defused, said Dragomir Gavrilovic, director of the programme aimed at ridding the Danube of NATO bombs. The project was launched by two Yugoslav companies last month. The two companies have 70 days to carry out investigations on a five kilometre (three mile) section of the Danube, where three bridges were destroyed during the NATO campaign. According to estimates by the Cowi-Utiber consortium, which is running the project, eight unexploded NATO bombs are lying on the riverbed in the Novi Sad region alone. The European Union will cover 85 percent of the 26-million-euro (23-million-dollar) costs of cleaning up Europe's second longest river and rebuilding the Sloboda bridge. NATO launched its 78-day bombing campaign in 1999 in a bid to force then Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic to back down over the province of Kosovo, where thousands of people were living in the open after fleeing Yugoslav attacks on their homes. The NATO bombing killed 1,500 people, including 81 children, according to Milosevic's reformist successor Vojislav Kostunica. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
