The explosion comes three days before a visit by US President George W Bush. The blast happened at about 2245 (0345 GMT Thursday), outside a shopping centre, in an area with popular late-night restaurants and cinemas. Witnesses said there was damage to a hotel and bank across the street from the embassy, but the embassy itself appeared unscathed. Radio reports said at least four bodies could be seen in the rubble, including a boy wearing roller skates. There has been no immediate information on who planted the device. The US State Department in Washington was not immediately able to confirm the reports. A BBC correspondent in Lima said that two of the dead were reported to be caretakers. Bush visit Peruvian politicians are saying the explosion is a terrorist attack aimed at disrupting the visit by President Bush. Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo is out of the country attending a summit in Monterrey, Mexico, but Interior Minister Fernando Rospigliosi went to the scene to assess the damage. Mr Bush is due to arrive in Lima on Saturday for a meeting with President Toledo and leaders from Colombia, Bolivia and Ecuador. The BBC correspondent says fears have been growing of a resurgence of the Maoist Shining Path guerrilla movement.
