Besserabia Communists Scared By Radicalization of
Protests [For Besserabia read Moldova, a sovereign
nation and United Nations member, the name that
Moldovans and every nation but Romania refer to it
as.]

-In the crowd one cold observe the Romanian Senator
Ilie Ilascu, together with the chief of the OSCE
mission to the Republic of Moldavia, David Swartz....
-...the demonstrators came to the Great National
Assembly "to overthrow the communist regime
Voronin...."

The protests in the Republic of Moldavia seem to enter
a new, more radical, phase, in which people ask for a
block-resignation of the communist leadership and the
organization of anticipated elections. Plus the
withdrawal of the Russian troops from Transdniester.
On the other hand, the communists of the Republic of
Moldavia have no intention to acknowledge any of the
resolutions adopted by the Assembly, which they
consider a. "unauthorized action".

In spite of the extreme hinders organized by the
authorities, about 80,000 individuals gathered on
Sunday downtown Kishinev. The demonstrators were
caring placards with slogans like "We want the
communists' block-resignation!", "Down your hands from
Romanians' language and history!", "Down
russification!", "I love Schangen!", "Release
Cubreacov!", "Down the dictatorship!". In the crowd
one cold observe the Romanian Senator Ilie Ilascu,
together with the chief of the OSCE mission to the
Republic of Moldavia, David Swartz, who announced the
OSCE experts will monitor the Great National Assembly
of Kishinev. One thing to notice is that Ilie Ilascu's
presence to Kishinev seems to be able to complicate
the Moldavian-Romanian relationships, given that he is
Romanian parliamentarian. According to the press
bureau of the Senate of Romania, Ilie Ilascu had not
the permit of the Senate leadership to participate in
the manifestation.

The Great National Assembly started with the discourse
of the president of the Popular Christian and
Democratic Party (PPCD), Iurie Rosca, who declared
that "in spite of the terror, intimidation and
persecutions" of the communist regime of President
Voronin, demonstrators still reached the place of the
manifestation. He underlined that the demonstrators
came to the Great National Assembly "to overthrow the
communist regime Voronin in a peaceful, non-violent,
correct but irreconcilable way". At the end of the
meeting, the participants adopted a resolution in
which they ask for the "Parliament of the Republic of
Moldavia be convoked in a 48 hours term" and interdict
the activity of political parties with fascist, nazi
and communist orientations. The resolution also asks
that "the Government, the General Prosecutor, the
manager of the Intelligence and Security Service, the
president of the state company "Teleradio" Moldavia,
the manager of the national television and radio
present their resignations within the same
parliamentary meeting". "The 101 Deputies and the
substitutes on the respective lists give up their
mandates and the President establish a date for
anticipated parliamentarian elections and resign", the
document reads.

Moreover, the demonstrators adopted a declaration in
which they ask for the Russian federation to
unconditionally withdraw troops and arms from the
Republic of Moldavia, according to the engagements
taken within OSCE. At the same time, the participants
adopted a declaration on the disappearance of Deputy
Vlad Cubreacov, showing that "the disappearing of the
Christian-Democratic leader of European fame Vlad
Cubreacov represents an act of political terrorism
without precedent in the Republic of Moldavia".
