The strikers express massive solidarity with the Palestinian people. A loud �NO� was shouted against the governmental plans to undermine the social security system yesterday, 03/04/2002 at the 24hour general strike which was declared by Federations, trade unions and labour centers that participate in PAME. At the same time, the strike rallies all around Greece turned into massive manifestations in solidarity with the Palestinian People. The strike was especially successful: High participation in the sectors and the working places that had the strike had been declared, and massive and militant participation of the workers in the demonstrations which were held in 55 cities and towns of Greece. Especially high was the participation in the strike of the construction workers (reaching 100% in Athens), in the sector of textiles and clothing factories (between 90%-100% in various factories), in the pharmaceutical industries, while in the sector of paper industries the participation was above 70%. In the biggest port of Greece, Piraeus, all ships remained at dock in spite of the efforts by the mechanisms of the shipowners and the port police to break the strike. The main demands were the withdrawal of the anti-labour governmental plans, the walkout of the General Confederation of Greek Workers form the delusive "social dialogue", and the demand of public social insurance system according to the contemporary needs of the working class. The strikers and the people of Greece took part in the demonstrations by thousands. In Athens, the demonstrators marched to the Parliament and then continued to the Embassy of the US ending in front of the Israeli Embassy, expressing their solidarity amd support to the Palestinian people. * A Greek delegation which consists of MPs of the parties which participate in the Greek Parliament (ND, PASOK, KKE, Synaspismos) and members of trade unions and massive organizations arrived on Tuesday 2/4/2002 close to the Palestinian people. They already had various meetings with the President of the Palestinian Parliament, and with parties and organizations from Israel and Palestine. Their aim is to meet with Yassir Arafat but after asking for permission twice Israeli authorities, it was denied.The Greek delegation, among them 3 MPs from KKE, PASOK and Synaspismos participated in the huge demonstration which started from Jerusalem to end in Ramala, but was interrupted violently. * All the political youth organizations (ONNED, KNE, youth of SYN and youth of DIKKI) of Greece issued on April 2 a joint statement appealing to the Greek youth and its movement to strengthen the solidarity with the Palestinian people. In their appeal they denounce the Israeli occupation and highlight the responsibilities of US and EU. A delegation of the heads of the political youth organizations met yesterday Wednesday 3rd with the President of the Greek Parliament and with the ambassador of the Palestinian Authority in Athens, handing over to them the joint statement and informing about their position. They also decided to co-organize the big solidarity concert on April 10, and to send a joint delegation to Palestine. * An everyday siege of the Israeli Embassy takes place starting from today Thursday 4th of April, called by the Greek Committee for International Peace and Detente (EEDYE) and massive organizations. At the same time Every day more and more trade unions and mass organizations release statements in solidarity with the Palestinian people. * A big Solidarity Concert with the struggling Palestinian people will be held on Wednesday 10th of April in the Constitution Square of Athens with the participation of a lot of famous artists. The manifestation is called by trade unions, EEDYE, artists, municipalities and the political youth organizations of Greece.
