Kosovo's UN administrator urges stronger links with
Bosnia
SARAJEVO, April 15 (AFP) - The UN administrator in the
Serbian province of Kosovo, Michael Steiner, said on
Monday that the province should strengthen links with
Bosnia, a former partner in the ex-Yugoslavia.

"We know very well that Kosovo is not an island, it
has now also to get in touch with the neighbourhood.
This is one of the reasons why I'm here," he said
after meeting the UN representative in Bosnia, Jacques
Klein.

"We should also talk about our relationship between
Bosnia-Hercegovina and Kosovo, and how can we look
beyond our state as it is here, province as it is
there, and how we can work together," he said.

He was also scheduled on his one-day visit to meet the
chairman of Bosnia's tripartite presidency, Beriz
Belkic, and the former Bosnian president Alija
Izetbegovic, as well as the country's top
international envoy, Wolfgang Petritsch.

Steiner took over the UN administration in the
troubled province in February.

Kosovo has been under UN administration since June
1999, after an 11-week NATO bombing campaign of
Yugoslavia ended a crackdown by former president
Slobodan Milosevic of the mainly ethnic-Albanian
populated province of Serbia.

Steiner said that Kosovo could learn from Bosnia's own
experience of applying the Dayton peace agreement
which ended its 1992-95 war.

Steiner gathered experience in the Balkans while
serving until mid 1997 as the deputy to the
international envoy in Bosnia at that time, Swedish
diplomat Carl Bildt .

He also participated in the 1995 Dayton peace talks on
Bosnia.
