Sezer, Aliyev and Shevardnadze meet in Trabzon for
terrorism talks

-The leaders also discussed the Baku-Ceyhan main
export pipeline, running from Azerbaijan's capital on
the Caspian Sea, Baku, through Georgia and into the
Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.

On Monday, the Azeri and Georgian presidents arrived
in Turkey for a two-day meeting to discuss cooperation
in combatting terrorism.

The meeting comes amid reports that
al-Qaida-affiliated fighters have taken refuge in
Georgia, prompting U.S. officials to offer training
for Georgia's troops in anti-terrorism operations.

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer met with Azeri President
Haydar Aliyev and President Eduard Shevardnadze of
Georgia later Monday afternoon in Trabzon.

The leaders also discussed the Baku-Ceyhan main export
pipeline, running from Azerbaijan's capital on the
Caspian Sea, Baku, through Georgia and into the
Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.

Stability in the volatile region is to key for the
construction of the pipeline, and the leaders are
expected to focus on the security of the oil route.

The interior ministers of the three states will sign a
deal on Tuesday, which is planned to form the legal
basis of the trilateral cooperation, on collaborating
for struggling against terrorism, drug and psikotrop
material smuggling and organized crime.

President Sezer said in the opening of the summit,
that the priority and necessity for both three states
was the formation of peace and stability.

Sezer indicated that an annual gathering for the
presidents of the three countries, Turkey, Azerbaijan
and Georgia would be useful.

President Sezer commented that after the end of the
Cold War, the destruction of the walls, made
Azerbaijan and Georgia take the place that they
deserved in international society as independent and
sovereign states.

Sezer made reference to the importance of joint
attempts of the three states against the terrorist
centers in the region.

He also pointed out that the region became a real
focus of attention, in a time that globalization in
the economic field is a determining factor in
international relations.

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze stated that the
problems in the Caucasus should be solved through
dialog, and peaceful means.

Shevardnadze thanked President Sezer for the
hospitality, and expressed his belief that important
steps would be taken for the solution of the problems
during the Trabzon summit.

Aliyev, Shevardnadze and Sezer will have bilateral
meetings after the summit, as well.
