AFP. 30 April 2002. Communists expect 50,000 for May Day parade in Russian capital. MOSCOW -- Russia's communists expect more than 50,000 supporters to turn out for their annual May 1 Labor Day march here which will demand that Prime Minister Mikhail Kassianov's government resign, party leader Gennady Zyuganov said Tuesday. Marchers notably will decry the government's sale of agricultural land and "the exploitation of the people by monopolies," he told a press conference. The party chief said the march would also mark the May 9 defeat of Nazi Germany and the Orthodox Easter on May 5 -- the latter seen as ironic by one journalist who asked if it did not contradict the Marxist notion that "religion is the opium of the people."
