Sri Lankan Leftist Party Protest Govt Agreement With US ======================================= Xinhuanet 2002-06-25 18:14:25 ����COLOMBO, June 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Activists of a Sri Lankan leftist party staged a demonstration here on Tuesday to protest government's plan to enter into an agreement with the United States. ����A small group of New Left Front (NLF) activists and members ofother organizations shouted slogans and held up placards opposite the U.S. Embassy compound with a handful of police watching around.They said the agreement would pave the way for the U.S. naval vessels to have refueling facilities in the country. ����"The agreement, when signed, would make Sri Lanka a military sentry point of the United States," the NLF leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara, a former legislator, said. ����Placards held by the protesters said that Sri Lanka's sovereignty would be betrayed by the agreement. ����The U.S. and Sri Lankan government have been engaged in discussions to sign the Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement,which is expected to permit armed services of both countries to avail itself of servicing, repairs, spare parts and equipment of the other in exchange for payment or through the exchange of identical goods or goods of equivalent value. ����The formal signing of the agreement is expected to take place next month.
