Czech News Agency: Communists plan counter-summit,
demonstrations during NATO summit

July 15, 2002 10:08pm

PRAGUE, July 15 (CTK) - The Communist Party of Bohemia
and Moravia (KSCM) is preparing an international
conference for November that is supposed to be an
ideological counterweight to the NATO summit to take
place in Prague in November, KSCM spokeswoman Vera
Zezulkova told CTK today.

The KSCM and its international allies plan a protest
for November 20 on Prague's Old Town Square to protest
the meeting of heads of state and government from NATO
and Partnership for Peace.

The KSCM has contacted 40 European leftist parties
that began to confirm the participation of its
representatives at the counter-summit. The conference
it to offer Europe a different security alternative
than is offered by NATO Zezulkoova said adding that
the central committee of the KSCM took up planning the
conference today.

The KSCM has taken part in protests against
globalisation and the KSCM did not stand aside during
the meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the
World Bank meeting in Prague in September of 2000.
Besides anarchists, the communists and leftist youth
from all over Europe came to Prague during the meeting
and was the second biggest group. The demonstrations
of the communist youth, were usually peaceful,
however.

The top-level NATO and Partnership for Peace summit is
to take place in Prague on November 21 and 22 in the
Congress Centre. The summit will be accompanied by
major extensive security measures. Allies from NATO
will help to guard the air space above the Czech
Republic during the meeting.

European police forces are currently exchanging
information on individuals who could disturb the
summit and intelligence services are also cooperating.
All those involved with the organisation of the summit
will have to be vetted.

A total of 46 heads of state with large delegations
and several thousand journalists will come to Prague
during the summit. Anti-globalisation protesters are
also expected. Alexandr Vondra, the government
commissioner for the summit's preparation recently
said that he is satisfied with the summit's
preparation so far.
