NEWSLINE: OIL AND GAS

Chevron to invest US$3 billion in Kazakh oil
Following talks in Astana on July 17 with Kazakhstan
Prime Minister Imanghaliy Tasmagambetov, Chevron
President George Kirkland said his company will invest
US$3 billion in the joint venture TengizChevroil, in
which Chevron owns a 50 percent stake. Kirkland said
Chevron will build a new oil and gas refinery at
Atyrau in western Kazakhstan that upon completion in
2005 will make it possible to increase Kazakhstan's
annual oil extraction from the current 12.5 million
tons to 19 million tons, Interfax reported. (July 19)

Pipeline security glitch
Computerized military exercises involving Georgian,
Azerbaijani and Turkish officers scheduled to take
place in Georgia in late July are in jeopardy as the
Georgian General Staff can provide only 10 of the 26
computers required, a Georgian Defense Ministry
official told Caucasus Press. The exercises are to
focus on guaranteeing the safety of the planned
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil-export pipeline. (July 17)
