They were attacked at dawn on Friday with 107mm rockets and heavy machine-guns, the US military said. The US forces returned fire in the battle at a base near Lwara that lasted between one and two hours, a military spokesman at Bagram Air Base to the north of Kabul said. No casualties were reported in the violence, but US forces say the attack was more intense than usual. The US base at Lwara is close to the city of Khost, which has been the scene of bloody clashes in recent weeks between rival Afghan factions and tribes. US military bases in the area have come under sporadic rocket attack in the past.
