Bush about an attack on Iraq, DPA said. According to the foreign policy spokesman of the PDS parliamentary faction, Wolfgang Gehrcke, Bush had assured Schroeder during last May's visit to Germany that he would announce a decision on Iraq after Germany's September 22 elections. The decision was aimed at boosting Schroeder's reelection chances, the MP pointed out. Schroeder's reelection campaign has benefitted from German popular fears that a US assault on Iraq was imminent. The chancellor has repeatedly vowed not to back a US intervention in Iraq, even with a UN mandate. There have been speculations in the German media that Schroeder would switch on his anti-Iraq war position after Sunday's elections.
