[Yet once again. Ukraine is not alone in being
threatened with being a 'nation supporting a nation
that supports possibly considering developing weapons
of mass destruction' by those nations who have a near
monopoly on them.
Belarus and Armenia are already being sanctioned for
similar accusations and last week the mighty military
colossus that is the Bosnian Serb Republic was also
identified by Washington as exporting something or
other to Baghdad that might, conceivably, somehow or
another, although we have no proof, if everything else
was in place....]

Ukraine sold advanced radar system to Iraq: US

NEW YORK: Based on analysis of clandestine tape
recordings, US authorities have concluded that
Ukranian President Leonid D Kuchma personally approved
a plan in July 2000, to sell to Iraq, an advanced
radar system that could detect approaching aircraft
without the pilots knowledge.

Although there is no definitive proof that the sale
was made, the American government has "some
indications" that the radar units are now in Iraq, a
high-level US official told the New York Times.

"We are looking at a range of things in terms of how
we engage Ukraine and how we talk to Kuchma, the
official said, adding, "we are hopeful that it would
come to a conclusion in a week or so."

This finding follows a judgement by experts at the
Justice Department and elsewhere that the voice in the
tape was Kuchma's and that the tape itself, was
authentic.

US has relayed the finding to Nato members as well as
to Ukranian officials, whose response is "mostly a
denial that this has happened, the report quoted US
officials as saying.

The tape, a part of 300 hours of secretly recorded
conversations brought to the US by a onetime Ukranian
presidential security guard, who fled his homeland in
2001 is said to be a document a conversation between
Kuchma and then director of Ukraine's arms export
agency, Valery Malev.

The Kolchuga system has a complex of four receivers
that pick up and co-ordinate the position of signals
emitted by a approaching objects. It is billed capable
of detecting aircraft as far away as 800 km and ground
targets up to 600 km away.
