http://sg.news.yahoo.com/020925/1/3358d.html Agence France-Presse Wednesday September 25, 2002 French soldiers near rebel-held Ivory Coast town French troops backed by tanks are in position near the rebel-held central city of Bouake in Ivory Coast and can strike quickly if need be to protect foreign nationals, military sources revealed. "They're a few kilometers out," a military official in Paris, who asked not to be named. "They can be there in half an hour," he said Wednesday. Disgruntled army soldiers took control of Bouake, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the Ivorian capital Yamoussoukro, a week ago following a failed coup attempt in the west African state. France deployed some 250 troops from Ivory Coast's main city Abidjan to Yamoussoukro on Monday to protect the 1,000 foreign nationals living in Bouake, 600 of whom are French. A second contingent was sent on Tuesday. The French army maintains a 600-strong garrison in the Ivorian coastal city of Abidjan, and reinforcements arrived at the weekend from France and Gabon. The official in Paris said troops could follow the situation in Bouake thanks to "assets on the ground", hinting that intelligence officials were already in the city. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
