Reuters; AP. 25 September 2002. Israel demolishes homes of three
militants; Jewish settlers announce new settlement in heart of West Bank.
HEBRON and JERUSALEM -- Israeli troops demolished three houses belonging
to Palestinian militants in the West Bank on Wednesday, witnesses said.
A house belonging to Diab Schweiki of the Islamic Jihad group was wired
with explosives and blown up on a hillside of the sprawling city of
Hebron. Schweiki is wanted by Israel.
The second house, south of Hebron in the village of Dura, belonged to
Anis and Akram Namoura, two brothers imprisoned by Israel a year ago for
carrying out attacks on Israelis.
Palestinian sources said both served in Force 17, the personal bodyguard
of President Yasser Arafat, and were members of his Fatah movement.
A third house, belonging to Sheikh Abd al-Haliq Natshe, an official of
Hamas, was destroyed in Hebron, witnesses said.
The Israeli army confirmed that it carried out the demolitions which
critics call collective punishment.
Palestinian neighbours said about 25 people in total lived in the three
houses.
Meanwhile, near the Palestinian city of Nablus, Jewish settlers
inaugurated a West Bank community Wednesday with speeches, music and
cotton candy in a high-profile challenge to government promises to block
new settlement on land Arabs see as part of an eventual Palestinian state.
Indicating at least unofficial government support, Deputy Internal
Security Minister Gideon Ezra attended the ceremony and praised the
settlers for their determination. "We won't move from here," he said.
The ceremony establishing the community of Rehalim marked the first time
that permanent houses were built in a settlement the government
officially views as illegal, fueling Palestinian fears that Israel,
despite its repeated denials, intends to establish new settlements in
land they claim.
Palestinian Cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said the Palestinian Authority
would protest Rehalim in letters to the United States and Europe, which
have called on Israel to halt settlement activity.
"This is just adding fuel to the fire... settlements to the Palestinians
is a grand threat to their existence and to their aspirations," Erekat
said. "This is an act that we condemn and we hold the Israelis fully
responsible for the consequences."
