Georgians kill 3 Abkhazian law enforcers

On Wednesday at 8.30 local time in the Gal district of
Abkhazia a passenger car, in which three staffers of
the Abkhaz authorities were driving, was fired at on
the Gal-Sukhumi highway, reported the Foreign Ministry
of Abkhazia (a self-proclaimed republic on Georgia's
territory).

Alexander Studenikin, press secretary of the Abkhaz
Foreign Ministry, noted that the shots were fired by
"Georgian terrorists who got into Abkhazia from
Western Georgia". "Two officers of the State Customs
Committee of Abkhazia and one serviceman of the
frontier unit of Abkhazia were killed," noted
Studenikin. //RIA-Novosti

Abkhaz officials killed in Georgian border zone

-The Abkhaz police in the region are on high alert,
Lavglava told AFP.

TBILISI, Sept 25 (AFP) - An Abkhaz border guard and
two customs officers died early Wednesday when a
rocket struck their patrol vehicle near the informal
border between the separatist republic of Abhazia and
the rest of Georgia, the Abkhaz interior ministry
reported.

Abkhaz Deputy Interior Minister Valery Lavglava blamed
the attack on "Georgian saboteurs who have recently
stepped up their activities in the Gali region" in
southern Abkhazia.

The Abkhaz police in the region are on high alert,
Lavglava told AFP.

There has been no claim of responsibility from
Georgian forces in the region.

The former autonomous republic of Abkhazia, in western
Georgia, obtained de facto independence from Tbilisi
after bitter fighting in 1992-93.

Some of the ethnic Georgians forced to flee the region
have formed armed groups, which are now trying to
reunite Abkhazia with the rest of the country.

The situation deteriorated following an incursion of
Chechen rebels into the region in October 2001 which
led to the deployment of Georgian and Abkhaz troops
into the Kodor Gorge border zone.

On Tuesday, Georgia accused Russia of sending troops
into the Kodor Gorge to "destabilise the region."

US opposed to Russian attack on Georgia: Rumsfeld

WARSAW(AFP): The United States is opposed to any move
by Russia to bomb Georgia in a bid to stop rebels
using the country's territory to mount raids against
its troops, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said
on Wednesday.
"The United States position is that it's important
that Georgia's sovereignty be respected", Rumsfeld
said at the end of a two-day meeting of NATO defense
ministers, which was attended by Russian counterpart
Sergei Ivanov.
"We do not favor bombing in that area".
Rumsfeld stressed however that Washington had
understanding for Russia's situation.
"We recognise the difficulty that it poses for Russia
because it is correct that there are portions in the
world that are not being governed and where people are
able to take advantage of borders," he said.
"But the US have taken some our forces into Georgia.
We have worked with the Georgian government to try to
train some of their people to try to develop a greater
degree of confidence so that they can deal with the
problem," he said.
"And President Bush has urged President Putin to work
closely with the Georgian government and see if they
can fashion a way to deal effectively with what is
really a serious problem."
In an interview published in a Polish newspaper ahead
of his meeting with NATO ministers, Ivanov said he was
more concerned about the situation on the
Russia-Georgia border, allegedly used by Chechen
rebels to launch anti-Russian attacks, than he was
about Iraq.
He said Russia has "irrefutable proof" that the
Georgian authorities were not fighting terrorism as
they contend and that "some of these authorities are
directly involved with terrorists."
Moscow has accused Tbilisi of turning a blind eye to
rebels allegedly using Georgian territory,
particularly the lawless Pankisi Gorge region
bordering breakaway Chechnya, as a rear base for raids
against Russian troops.
Russia has threatened to launch a military operation
into the gorge.
Moscow has been trying for almost three years to quell
the separatist insurgency in Chechnya, in what it has
described as an anti-terrorist operation.
