war against Iraq; Greek Cypriots rally against British bases.

MADRID and LIMASSOL --Thousands of people marched through Madrid Sunday
to demand that U.S. President George W. Bush not to go to war with Iraq
and urge Spain's government refrain from supporting it.

The protesters carried signs saying "Terror USA!" and photo placards
equating Bush with Adolf Hitler as they marched to the central Puerta
del Sol square.

Police said nearly 3,000 people took part.

The protest was organized by a broad variety of leftist groups,
including the Arab Solidarity Committee, labor unions, communist women's
groups and an association of transsexuals.

Gaspar Llamazares of the formerly communist United Left party said a war
would be "illegal and illegitimate against a people who have already
suffered enough."

He called on Spanish government to refrain from supporting it, because
it would only serve U.S. strategic interests.

Earlier, hundreds of Greek Cypriots rallied peacefully on Sunday against
the presence of British bases on the island, which could be used in an
attack on Iraq.

"It is very likely the bases in Cyprus will be used in an unjust war
against a neighbour state... we demand the abolition of the bases and
total demilitarisation of Cyprus," said parliamentary speaker and
Communist leader Demetris Christofias.

Sunday's rally, organised by a Cyprus peace group and the Green Party,
attracted around 2,000 people who marched in the burning sun to a
vicinity close to Akrotiri where Britain is constructing new
communications masts.

Some children held placards with the words "axis of evil" above a
portrait of George W. Bush.

British soldiers patrolled the fenced-off antenna compound. The
antennas have angered environmentalists and locals, who fear they pose
health and ecological risks.

"They'll be spying on us and our neighbours," said a representative of
the Cyprus peace council.

Parliament, dominated by opposition parties, has strongly opposed the
construction of the antennas.
