Iran backs inspections, calls for peace coalition

-"We will not join any coalition for war. We support a
coalition for peace, and we are ready to do everything
to form such a coalition for peace to prevent a new
war."

TEHRAN (AFP): Iran on Wednesday hailed a deal struck
in Vienna between Iraqi and UN officials on arms
inspections and called for opponents of US war plans
to join a "coalition for peace".

"We have stated on numerous occasions that we are
against all unilateral action. The initiative on
inspections has been made in the framework of UN
resolutions, and we support it," government spokesman
Abdollah Ramezanzadeh told reporters.

"Before the return of inspectors, we advised Iraq to
accept them. And now, we advise others not to plunge
the region into a new war," he added, in a clear
reference to US President George W. Bush's
administration.

"We will not join any coalition for war. We support a
coalition for peace, and we are ready to do everything
to form such a coalition for peace to prevent a new
war," the spokesman added.

UN inspection agency UNMOVIC head Hans Blix and Iraqi
officials agreed Tuesday on an arrangement for the
return of arms inspectors after a four-year absence,
but Washington vowed to stop them going back unless
the UN took a tougher stance to disarm Iraq.
