Turkish army sets up war academy for Georgian army

-The opening of the academy is a major step taken in
the direction of bringing the Georgian army into line
with NATO standards, said Georgian Defense Minister
Gen. David Tevzadze at the ceremony.

Turkish and Georgian officials gathered for a ceremony
in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi to mark the opening
of a war academy that was built by the Turkish Armed
Forces (TSK).

The opening of the academy is a major step taken in
the direction of bringing the Georgian army into line
with NATO standards, said Georgian Defense Minister
Gen. David Tevzadze at the ceremony.

"The two countries have a long history of friendship,"
said Gen. Koksal Karabay, the head of the Operations
Department of the Turkish General Staff.

He said Turkish-Georgian military ties had gained a
special momentum after the conclusion of a series of
agreements in the years 1996 and 1997. The academy
will help the Georgian armed forces to recruit
military officers it needs and contribute to further
development of bilateral ties, he went on to say.

"This academy will constitute a new bridge of
friendship between the two countries. The
next-generation command line of the Georgian army will
graduate from this academy and the role of the academy
in Georgia's security will be crucial."

Addressing the same ceremony, the academy's commander
Gen. Omar Lekveishvilli noted that the Turkish army
had been assisting the Georgian army for years in the
training of the Georgian officers. The training
programs have been drafted by Turkish officers.

The academy's Turkish deputy commander Emin Aktas said
the school would admit 214 students this year. They
will graduate as officers.

Georgian State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze devoted
his address to an account of the importance of the
academy in the development of Turkish-Georgian ties.

The ceremony was attended, in addition to Jorbenadze
and Georgian Defense Minister Tevzadze, by Turkish
Ambassador in Tbilisi Dicle Kopuz and a group of
high-level Georgian government officials.
