TBILISI, Oct 8 (AFP) - US and Turkish military
officials are to meet with their Georgian counterparts
in Tbilisi on Wednesday to coordinate military aid to
Georgia, the ex-Soviet republic's defence minister
said Tuesday.
The minister, David Tevzadze, said he hoped that
"other NATO member states would take part (along with
the United States and Turkey) in training and
equipping Georgia's armed forces."
He was speaking at a ceremony inaugurating the start
of the curricular year at Georgia's Military Academy,
where Turkish officers are providing some of the
instruction.
A top member of the Turkish general staff, General
Koksal Karabay, told the gathering that a five-year
military cooperation accord between Georgia and
Turkey, which are neighbours, provided for Turkish
methods of officer training in the academy.
Ankara and Tbilisi have nurtured close relations since
the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Turkey, a
NATO member, decided in November to finance the
renovation of the Georgian military base of Vaziani,
evacuated by the Russian army.
US military instructors are also training Georgian
forces in anti-terrorism.
